Newborn Session Preparation Guide
After more than 20 years of photographing newborns, I’ve found that thoughtful preparation makes all the difference in creating a smooth, calm session and beautiful final images. These tips are designed to help your baby feel comfortable and relaxed so we can create the best possible photographs in your home.
My goal is always to provide a stress-free experience while delivering timeless newborn portraits.
Your Baby’s Arrival
-
Please notify me within 24 hours of your baby’s birth
-
Newborns are best photographed within the first 5–10 days
-
Early notification allows me to schedule your session at the ideal time
-
If you are planning a Bris, newborn sessions are best scheduled beforehand (around 5–7 days old)
The Day Before and Morning of Your Session
-
If exclusively breastfeeding, consider limiting caffeine intake for 24 hours prior
-
Avoid spicy, gassy (veggies), caffeine or acidic foods that may cause baby discomfort. Trust me when I say this can make or break a session. If you are not breastfeeding or using breastmilk, you can disregard.
-
Inform me in advance if your baby is experiencing:
-
Gas
-
Reflux
-
Jaundice
-
General fussiness
-
Session Day
-
Try to keep your baby awake for a bit before the session, if possible
-
Please adjust your feeding schedule for when I arrive to prep at approximately 9:15 (session begins promptly at 10am) A FULL feeding right before we begin helps babies settle and sleep. While I am prepping and you are feeding we can discuss the session
-
Do not apply diaper cream, oils, or lotions to baby’s skin on session day
-
Remove any bandages or medical tape prior to the session, if applicable
-
Notify me in advance if anyone in the household is unwell
Sessions will not proceed if illness is present in the home to ensure newborn safety and my health for my next tiny client. Without notice no refunds will be issued.
PLEASE NOTE: Newborn sessions are best done under calm, quiet, distraction free conditions. An audience does not allow for that, I would prefer it to be parents only to be present. Life is too stressful for new parents as it is! I want you to relax and enjoy the process without feeling like you have to entertain or explain to your friends and extended family. Trust me, I've been doing this a long time!
Home Preparation
To create the best environment for your newborn session, please prepare the following:
-
Choose a clean, clutter-free room with good natural light
-
Open window coverings to allow in as much natural light as possible
-
Ensure there is plenty of open floor for my large bean bag and light set up
-
Be prepared to warm the room to approximately 80–85°F for your baby’s comfort
-
Adjust air conditioning or fans as needed during the session
A warm, well-lit space helps keep your baby comfortable and allows for the soft, natural imagery seen throughout my work.
My Arrival at your home
- I will arrive 30-45 minutes early to prep, this is when I would love for you to feed your little one.
What to Have Ready at Home
I bring everything needed for your baby’s session. Please have the following available:
-
Pacifier (even if your baby doesn’t typically use one)
-
Extra milk or formula, sometimes baby needs a little top off during the session
-
Gas drops, if you use them
-
Diapers and wipes
Your home may be warmed slightly for baby’s comfort, so dressing in light layers is recommended.
Parents & Siblings
-
Parents should wear simple, neutral tones without bold patterns or logos
-
Sibling participation must be discussed prior to booking
-
If included, sibling images typically take place at the end of the session. Please note that it is my discretion on including very young siblings as your newborn's safety is my first priority
-
Toddler participation is never guaranteed and depends on:
-
Cooperation
-
Safety
-
Overall session flow
-
Final Thoughts
These preparation steps are designed to support your baby’s comfort and safety while allowing your session to unfold naturally. Every baby is different, and flexibility is always part of the process.
