Cake Smash Sessions are such a fun way to capture your baby's first year milestone. Almost a right of passage into toddlerdom. Here are some tips that will help aid us in a fun, productive cake smash session.
As with all my sessions, my focus will be on your baby so I keep the props to a minimum. Also, staying in my style I use white, cream, grey or pink background for my cake smash sessions with corresponding colored balloons. Please let me know if you'd like to omit the balloons... I personally love the simplicity of baby and cake only. (no balloons)
Please let me know in advance what color(s) you will order for your cake. DON'T TRUST THE BAKER to know your color choices. I get cakes at least every other session that are not what the colors we discussed resulting in cakes that don't match the background, theme or balloons. Make sure they understand what color you're asking for. Show them samples of specific colors. I cannot stress this enough.
Try to avoid bright colors towards the top of the cake. When baby gets it on around their mouth it gives them a clown appearance.
I prefer white cake on the inside, regular frosting (no fondant). My clients have brought both sizes 6" and 8", cupcake style and regular round. It's really just your personal preference.
Due to the nature of the cake smash, we only provide the tutu's for the girls.
If you want your baby girl to wear a top, please bring it along.
Boys - please bring coordinating shorts or cute outfit like the one below. Etsy has some darling stuff!
Remember to let Maxine know your color selections.
SMASHING OF THE CAKE:
Cake smash sessions generally only go one of two ways. Either way below happens quickly and it's very entertaining!
The baby loves it and makes a huge funny mess.
The baby wants nothing to do with the cake. Now that they are on the move they usually just crawl or walk away. Wear your yoga pants so you can chase your baby down!
We do not offer themed sessions (example - Mickey Mouse)
Make sure the cake has been out of the fridge overnight (unless your home is super warm). 72 degrees - room temperature is best. If it's too cold or the frosting is hard they usually won't want to touch it.
Please arrive at least 10 minutes early to allow time to settle into the studio, get to know your baby as well allowing time for me to prep the cake in the set.
Wear clothes you don't mind getting cake on. When we are done with the session, they are usually covered in cake! It can be a very messy situation.
Please do not bring any other children, we want things very calm and quiet in the studio and is also why we ask that you just bring one other adult or even better, for you to come on your own. Less distraction for baby is best. Also, it's my experience that baby's will interact with me better when there is less of an audience. Think about it from their perspective, if there are 4 people trying to get their attention and make them smile or are even just looking at them they can get very serious, even worried wondering why everyone is looking at them. I will also ask that you sit back and enjoy the session so hopefully baby will interact with me and the camera. There's nothing more adorable than a baby looking right into the lens.
Has your baby been sick? Please let me know if your child has experienced any illness up ten days prior to your session. As I'm sure you can understand, the welfare of the vulnerable newborn babies that grace our studio is our number one priority. If your child is sick or at any stage of a cold or on antibiotics for example you are asked to give 48 hour notice to avoid a reschedule fee. Children that are sick will NOT be permitted in the studio and as much as we hate to do so, will be turned away if arriving for their session with an illness or overcoming illness. A rescheduling fee of $300 will be applied. This also includes any other person in the household that may be attending the session. Thank you for your understanding.
Disclaimer... Pre-toddlers (10 plus months) are tough! A successful session depends on many factors, your baby's overall cooperation, disposition, stranger danger and separation anxiety. In addition, their mobile now! Due to the amount of preparation that goes into our sessions as well as studio time, there are no refunds. Even if no images are taken. Reshoots are not offered without a fee.
If you're running behind please give me a call or text. 805-660-3390. Now that we are in our busy baby season, sessions are usually held back to back with the only time in between for sanitizing and set up.
Almost forgot, please let me know if you're baby is having a bit of separation anxiety or stranger danger. I'll have a softer demeanor when you arrive.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
I'm looking forward to your baby's cake smash! Let's hope it's super messy!
Personal video and photographs (iphone etc) are not permitted in the studio.
